Sound Suppressors and Accessory Attachment Contrary to popular belief, most sound suppressors (more commonly known as "silencers") do NOT make firearms nearly inaudible. A good suppressor used with subsonic ammunition (or a good suppressor that reduces the speed of a supersonic bullet to subsonic levels) can reduce the shot's volume to a level quieter than the action of the gun, which is still very loud. On average, a small caliber (5.56x45mm, 7.62x39mm) rifle's action is slightly quieter a pneumatic nail gun, though a pistol's action is generally much quieter still. A bolt action .22 LR with a good suppressor is about the only gun as quiet as in the movies, but it still sounds more like a crack, not a weird plink, so movies are pretty much just totally wrong. In an example of poor suppressor usage on our own board, a character once used a suppressed semiautomatic 9x19mm pistol to kill a man without alerting the other people in the house. Realistically, everybody in the house would still have heard something loud and very unusual. Before writing in the usage of a sound suppressor, be sure you have the proper suppressor for your weapon and that it's possible to attach a suppressor to your weapon.
